Use of Capital and small letters in English

In English, a small letter is usually used to write any word or sentence. But it is also essential to use uppercase character or capital letter. To use uppercase character, you should know some important points, which are the following:

  • The first letter of a particular name of a person, place, day, month, country, language etc. is always in capital letter. For example- Virat Kohli, I love God.
  • The first letter of each sentence is always in a capital letter. For example – You are not ready.
  • The first letter of each line of an English Poem is in a capital letter. For example :
All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
  • The pronoun ‘I’ is always in capital letter. Whether it is at the beginning or in the middle of the sentence. Example – I am ready. You know that I am honest.
  • We also use capital letters to write abbreviations or short forms. For Example – M.A., S.D.O.etc.

What is Vowels and Consonants?

There are three types of letters in English Grammar.

  1. Vowels
  2. Consonants
  3. Semivowels

What is vowels?

What is vowels – The letter which is pronounced freely. Like any sound that comes out of your throat and does not touch your tongue, teeth, lips etc. it is called Vowels.

There are 5 such letters in English which are pronounced independently.

A, E, I, O, U

What is Consonants?

What is consonants – We cannot pronounce consonants independently because we have to use tongue, teeth or lips to pronounce any consonant. To pronounce any consonant requires another vowel or consonant. For Example – b + i = B, e + f = F, e + k + s = x etc.

All letters except ‘a’, ‘e’, ‘i’, ‘o’, ‘u’ are called consonants.

What is semi vowels?

What is semi vowels – ‘W’ and ‘Y’ are called semivowels. When it is at the beginning of a word, then it is called Consonants and when it is in the middle or end of a word, then it is called Vowels. For Example – Walk (here you can see the word starts with ‘w’, so ‘w’ sounds like ‘v’ which is a consonant.). Cow (Now you can see here that ‘w’ is at the end of the word so the sound of ‘w’ is ‘u’ which is a vowel.), Young (‘Y’ is a consonant.), Boy (here ‘y’ sounds like ‘i’) etc.
